Enterprise Showcase

Congratulations to Jocelyn Dunn for placing first in the Avalon East District Enterprise Showcase.

Of the ninety-nine displays at the showcase, eight were selected to represent the district at the provincial showcase in Corner Brook on May 22-26.

Jennifer Farrell and Stephanie Noseworthy also placed in the top eight and will  represent their school at the provincials.
 

 

PWC Student Junior Male Athlete of the Year!
At a Reception on May 1, 2003, Kurt Barrington was named Newfoundland & Labrador Athletic Association Junior Male Athlete of the Year for 2002. Congratulations Kurt on this very prestigious honor!

Videoconferencing for IT Week

Prince of Wales Collegiate participated in several videoconferences with Burnaby South Secondary School in B.C. on the topics below:

  • May 9, 2003 James Burke (Bio) at 1:30 pm. Schools in Ontario, Nova Scotia hooked into this videoconference. Click here to find out what he will be talked about.

  • May 13, 2003 Vinton Cerf (Bio)at 1:30 pm. The Newfoundland School for the Deaf also participated in this videoconference. Dr. Cerf gave a presentation on technology and it's impact on society. He gave the presentation from his office in the United States using the Internet, a medium of communication that he is partly credited with creating.  Students from each school asked many excellent questions.

PWC Art Technology Class Enter Logos in regional contest.

Two classes of Art Technology classes submitted logos for the IT Week Promotional Button contest. The graphic shows an animated gif of the logos that were submitted from PWC Students. The winner of the contest was Krystal Strickland and her design can be seen in the left column.

Congratulations to Cory Janes

Cory has been awarded The Canadian Cadet Scholarship for this year, Cory will receive $1000 toward his university education. Corey is a member of the CLB Army Cadets, in addition to the scholarship he has also been awarded The Lord Strathcona Medal, this is the highest award that can be  awarded to an Army Cadet. Corey also placed 5th. in the Canadian Biathlon (ski/shoot) in this year's competition.

Scholarships at MUN
Any student entering MUN in Sept. 2003 with an average of 90% or higher and who does not receive a scholarship of equal or higher value from MUN will receive an entrance scholarship valued at $2,000.00. With an average between 85% - 89.9% will receive an entrance scholarship valued at 1,000.00. Also any student entering MUN who has won either the Junior Jubilee, the Provincial Electoral District, the Centenary of Responsible Government, or the Constable W.C. Moss Scholarship, and does not receive a scholarship of equal of higher value from MUN will receive one of matching value to the above noted provincial scholarship.

PWC Enterprise Showcase is TODAY! Fri. May 2

PWC Enterprise students will be involved in the school enterprise showcase on Friday morning (May 2). Students have setup 80 displays of business ideas that have been implemented this year. A team of  15 judges from the community will be reviewing the projects and twelve will be selected to move to the Regionals at Booth on Tuesday (May 6).

Job Shadowing at PWC

April 15th many level III students will be going out into the workplace as part of our Job Shadowing Program. This program successfully introduces students to the world of work.

Students should have their course selection sheets submitted as of the end of March. If you do not please notify the office ASAP.

Coins for Cancer Assembly

Students from PWC and other schools gathered for an assembly Tuesday, March 31st in PWC's gymnasium to complete the Coins for Cancer March Drive. We would like to thank all students and teachers for their participation!
                                                         


 

International Studies

Applications for the 2003-2004 International Studies Program are now available in the main office.  These must be completed and returned by April 16.

Night School Registration being held on April 9th

The Avalon East School District will be offering an 8-week Night School program. This Night School will be held at Prince of Wales Collegiate and will start during the week of April 14 and finish during the week of June 9, 2003.

Registration will be held on Wednesday, April 9, from 6:30 to 10:00PM at Prince of Wales Collegiate, Paton Street, St. John’s.

Where there is sufficient interest to warrant, classes will be offered in the following 3000-level courses Math 3200/3204/3205, Thematic Lit 3201, English 3101, Biology 3201, Chemistry 3202, Physics 3204, Earth Systems 3209, History 3201, Geography 3202, and French 3200.

Classes will be held for 6 hours per week on Monday/Wednesday OR Tuesday/Thursday, for a total of 48 hours. Students will be required to complete a registration form and pay the required fees ($150.00 per course) at the time of registration. For further information please call 758-2388.

2003 East Coast Minor Provincial Basketball championship
Congratulations to the PWC Boys Basketball Team on winning the Under-17 Provincial Championship this past weekend. The team members would like to say thanks to the many fans that came out in support. Members of the team are: Alex Collins, Mark Woodland, John Bartlett, Robert Viscount, Robert Murphy, Chris Kielley, John Nichols, Adam Kane, Tony Green, Cory Barry, Danny Williams, and Jeremy Somerton. The coaches were John Elkins and Yasir Khan. Alex Collins was selected as the Tournament MVP and Adam Kane was selected as the best defensive player of the tournament. Mark Woodland also received an award for outstanding in the championship game. WAY TO GO GUYS!

Coins for Cancer
PWC students and teachers will proudly join Geoff Eaton again this year in his Coins for Cancer Drive during the month of March. PWC's RealTime Cancer student team will coordinate Geoff's effort, and to
help him achieve his goals, all are invited to participate in the
Drive! How to participate? Drop off your coins to PWC throughout March! We will be working hard to support Geoff in his campaign, and we encourage students, parents, alumni, and friends to drop by with donations. Thank-you for any contributions you are able to make.

Registration for AP exams
...will take place in Room 211 during the first half of lunch (til 12:30) and from 3:00 - 3:15 on March 10, 11, & 12. The fee for each course i $130. This includes a nonrefundable deposit of $25. The preferred method of payment is by cheque to Prince of Wales Collegiate. A late fee will apply to any exams ordered after the deadline.

Tri-mentoring at MUN

Grade 12 students are invited to participate in
Tri-mentoring at Memorial - a program in Memorial's Department of Career Development & Experiential Learning. This program links grade 12 students to senior Memorial students studying in their field of interest. Mentors are available in the following areas: Biology, Social Work, Business, Earth Science, Physics, Neuroscience & Nutrition and Education. For more information and online applications

Friday, March 21 is World Poetry Day!

Poetry can be for everyone and poems can be about anything. We meet people, we go places, we feel emotions, and we have thoughts. Any of these can be the subject matter for a poem. So, on World Poetry Day, read a poem, write a poem, share a poem in class, or elsewhere. Dare to do it – poetry. Explore new worlds!

At Prince of Wales, Patrick Warner, a Newfoundland Poet, will be conducting a seminar for Prince of Wales Collegiate poets on Poetry Day.

Info Session Tomorrow, Wed March 5th for parents and grade nine students
There will be an information session March 5 (Wed.) for parents and grade nine students that will be attending PWC for the first time in Sept 2003. This meeting starts at 7:30 in PWC's gym. PWC teachers will be on hand to answer any questions about programming and course selection that you may have. Refreshments to follow.

LIP SYNC
The Enterprise 3205 class will be hosting the LIPSYNC of 2003 on February 28th, in the gym. Tickets are $1.00 per person, and must be paid in advance. Profits will pay for new curtains for the gym. See sign-up sheets and ground rules for further details. ALL genres of music will be accepted!
                                                           

 

Badger Drive
Students are encouraged to bring $1 to homeroom to contribute to the Badger Relief Fund. We have set a goal for $1000. Please bring your money to homeroom by Wednesday.

18 Students and 3 teachers from PWC returned from Cuba on Monday with much excitement! They are full of wonderful stories and great experiences!

Oxfam Program Officer to Speak at PWC
Lucie LaLanne is a Food Security Program Officer with Oxfam in Ethiopia. On Friday she will be at PWC to speak to students in Global Issues. The area of interest here is famine as well as the economics of food production.

PWC Graduates of 2002

Students from the 2002 Graduating class will be returning to PWC on Thursday night to receive diplomas.  Students are asked to meet in the LRC at 6:30 and to please bring sandwiches/cookies for after the ceremony.                                                            

Share the Spirit Christmas Food Hampers

Don't forget to bring in your food items for your homeroom Christmas Hampers! The hampers will be collected after homeroom on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

                                                           

Pancake Breakfast!

Teachers would like to invite students to a Christmas Pancake Breakfast on Friday (Dec. 20)  morning. Your teachers will be cooking up a feast of eggs, toast and of course PANCAKES galore! Starting at 8:30 in the cafeteria the cost is a donation to the food bank. So bring along your a ppetite!

The Pancake Breakfast will be followed by a Christmas 'DO' in the gymnasium. The teachers are promising some great Christmas Fun for students! Make sure you don't miss it!

It's only half a day on Friday, busses will leave the school at noon.
 

 

Goin' For Goals
This educational program of the Leafs Foundation is all about stressing to students the importance of setting goals, performing to the best of their abilities, and motivate them to have good attendance.

So far this year PWC has hosted speaker Ron Maclean, broadcaster of Hockey Night in Canada. He spoke to students about the Goin' For Goals program.

Also, later this week students will attend an assembly where students will be recognized for various achievements such as Academics, Attitude and contribution to school spirit.

Traffic Jam, the breakfast club @ PWC is designed to meet the nutritional needs of busy teens who sometimes skip the most important meal for success in school: breakfast. It runs every Tuesday & Thursday from 8:00 - 8:30, in the PWC cafeteria. This service is free, run by a team of  participating teachers, but all donations are gratefully accepted. [Contact chairperson Carl George, for details]. We would like to thank Great Canadian Bagel for their generous assistance, as well as The School Lunch Program. Please note: if your  business can donate a suitable item, Traffic Jam will happily oblige.

PWC Career Day

 This year students will attend a Career Day on Dec. 10, 2002. During homeroom students filled in their selections for what presentations they will attend that day and will receive their personalized schedule on the morning of the 10th.

So what is Career Day? On this day we will make available to students top notch resource people who will be able to answer their questions from a real life perspective...this is a great opportunity for our students to talk with specific people in careers of that they may be interested in!

Spanish Guests

Spanish Students at PWC would like to thank guests Marta and Jose Cano, from Colombia. They spoke (in Spanish only to two groups of students and were extremely eager to share their culture. The classes were very dynamic classes and students asked lots of questions.

Novel Cinema Workshop

On Friday, October 18th students from Novel Cinema attended a CBC Radio One Crosstalk workshop. Host Anne Budgell, fielded questions between our students, and other film lovers, and a 'Critic's Panel' of experts in film criticism: Brian Johnson from 'Maclean's', Katherine Monk from 'DNTO', and Noreen Golfman, a freelance cultural critic. On Wed, please support the Daughters of Charity
Child Care Centre (orphanage) in Uganda by donating a dollar in homeroom.

PWC student Simone Guigne and her sister Francoise are working to find financial support to provide some Christmas gifts for children at an orphanage in Uganda. The project is being managed through PWC and Pearson College. The money will all go directly to the kids. Simone and a fellow student will be visiting classes on Wednesday morning to appeal to fellow students to donate a loonie or two to this cause. They will provide each homeroom with an envelope for donations.
                                                           

 

PWC Food Drive Nov. 2 (Saturday)

Get involved and have a great time doing something worthwhile for the community! This will be the 19th Annual Food Drive at PWC. It is co-sponsored by the Rotary Club.

How it works... Students should show up at the school at 8:30. Refreshments will be provided. Students will then be assigned a teachers or Rotary Club member who will drive them to their designated areas to collect food. After students will go to the Salvation Army Headquarters on Adams Avenue and drop off food. Students can stack shelves if they want. Free Hot Dogs and Drinks will be provided for lunch. 

In past years we have had close to 400 hundred students participate in this event. Students say they not only have a great time doing this but it makes them feel good to help people in need.

PWC Receives Clarica Education Grant

Mr. Dyke and My Barrington received an educational grant from Clarica today valued at $7000. This money will be used to do work in the area of Leadership through the Arts. Poetry Workshop
On Tuesday, September 24th PWC Level III French Immersion students participated in a poetry workshop with Québécoise writer Marie Villeneuve Lavigueur, coordinated by the Association Francophone de St-Jean. PWC students were engaged in a dynamic session during which they discovered creative ways to express their ideas. Our students were most enthusiastic about the very interactive session and they enjoyed and appreciated the workshop. Professional Development Day
Teachers spent a very successful day Friday during the Cluster 6 PD Closeout. Teachers and administrators from Beachy Cove, St. Andrew's, St. Theresa's, Leary's Brook, Larkhall, and  Prince of Wales Collegiate, met at PWC for a day filled with activities. After spending some time getting to know each other teachers listened to educator/author Ed Smith (pictured above left) who delivered the keynote address. Teachers then heard presentations from other schools in the cluster. Pictured above right teachers listen to Jan Adams talk about Leary's Brook Junior High.

PWC Assembly Remembers the Tradedy of Sept. 11, 2001
Students attended a poignant assembly in the gymnasium at PWC that remembered the one year anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy. Guest speaker Paul Snow, program director with the Salvation Army, worked at Ground Zero last November and spoke of his experiences there. Students listened in awe as he read personal accounts from his journal about what he witnessed. Guidance Counsellor, Mrs. Langdon also shared her experiences as a counsellor at Ground Zero when she worked there for two weeks last February. She also brought along a piece of glass and a steel cross made from pieces of rubble from the North Tower. Students then watched a very moving slideshow (Press function key F11 to view full screen) Click here to View and then listened to an essay by Roger Ebert read by Ms. O'Brien. Mr. Harpur concluded the assembly by leading students and teachers in a moment of prayer.

                                                           
RealTime Cancer Climb
Friday, Sept 20th, registration is 4:30- 5:45 pm. at Aliant Fort William Building The climb starts at 6:00 - $10 - students $15 - adults - no registration fee for individuals having $25 or more in pledges. Pledge sheets available from Home Room teachers (next week). Come out in HUGE numbers to support Geoff and his efforts to promote his awareness of cancer-related challenges.
                                                           

Students from PWC Participate in Cancer Relay

Saturday, Sept. 7, students from PWC raised over $1500 in aid of Cancer Research. The spirited students
 participated in a 12 hour relay race that took place in Mount Pearl. Many people at the event were very enthusiastic about the bright, cheerful, and dedicated adolescents that we have here at PWC. Thanks to all those who participated in this worthwhile event.
